Founded in 2001, ScriptLance is a site devoted mainly to technical projects such as programming and Web design, as implied by its name: scripting is somewhat of a synonym for programming. It is a moderate-sized site, used mainly by clients in North America and western Europe to get software projects done inexpensively using outsourced labor from Asia and eastern Europe.
ScriptLance is designed with simplicity in mind: you won’t find a lot of fancy features here, but the site is easy to use. There are no membership costs, and transaction fees for projects are low at only 5% for contractors, plus small costs charged to clients. Nearly all projects are fixed rate, and there is an optional escrow feature, though it is not used as often as on other sites. There is no hourly project support, and few bells and whistles.
ScriptLance is the only freelance marketplace aside from the Big Five that I’ve used personally for an extended period of time. I considered writing about it in more detail, like those sites, but decided against it—the site is considerably smaller than the others, and even though I’ve done a number of projects there myself, my experiences have convinced me that ScriptLance is simply not a good match for serious freelancers. The overall project quality is below average, with pay rates generally low to suit. The site is somewhat niche in its technical focus, unlike the major sites. And finally, the company leaves much to be desired when it comes to customer service and professionalism.
Here are a few more details about the site, following my standard assessment criteria.
